Instead I get real, in your face, hate on public transport from entitled, aggressive, nasty single mums. Or just one, actually, who decided she didnt need to get off at the back like everyone else and she was going to make sure everybody knew how angsty she was.

She was rude to my friends and I as we tried to get on, pushing us out of her way, using her son as a shield and telling everyone to ‘be more considerate, I have a child’. We noted (to ourselves, not her) that it wouldn’t have been a problem if she had just used the correct exit. She said something about us ‘setting a bad example’ and got off the bus.

We thought it was over. We took our seats.

She gets back on the bus, blocking the doorway to other passengers and starts berating the bus driver and telling him to kick us off the bus. He just laughed at her. I reminded her that she was stopping people from getting on and that we would like to go home and that she should do the same.

She marches up the bus towards us saying, “who do you think you are?” I returned the question, she responded, “I AM A SINGLE MUM!” To which I answered, “So? My mum’s a single mum. What’s your point?” She started telling us off for being ‘totally rude’, told us we didn’t deserve to go to university, and that when I was older and had children I would understand. I told her that she was making a huge assumption that I would ever be having children, and informed her that that’s not what every woman wants to do. Then she told us that we were a ‘disgrace to humanity’ and proceeded to hyperbolise, “is there no decency and compassion left in the world?!” And I am not sorry that I couldn’t help but laugh uncontrollably.

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, that made her more enraged at the fact that she couldn’t tell us off for her being wrong and that she couldn’t take out her frustrations on complete strangers. At this point she was stopping other passengers from sitting down and I just wanted the embarrassing scene to be over. Unfortunately her elderly mother steps back onto the bus saying, “It’s not their fault. They lack the genes for compassion.” I was done so I said, “good bye” about 50 times and waved. She wasn’t ever going to realise that she was acting like an insane person and demanded an apology, saying we should be more compassionate because she’s a single mum. I have absolutely no remorse for telling her, “nobody owes you anything for being a single mum”.

She lost it and started screaming, “You bitch! YOU BITCH!” And looked like she was about to punch me. To diffuse the situation and let everybody else go home we told her we would get off the bus. Which we did, and walked away from the absurd situation.

I grew up in a single-parent household. I fully appreciate the hardships faced by a single mother. I do not, however, believe that she is owed any special privilege by complete strangers using a public service. And if she can’t use it correctly and in a courteous manner it’s not everyone elses problem. She is not entitled to push people out of her way, be abusive, or expect to not be told off for causing inconvenience to everyone else.

Does the state of my mental health mean i get a free ride? Does my shitty childhood mean I can act like an ass and inconvenience an entire bus full of strangers? The fact of the matter is - compassion has absolutely nothing to do with riding the goddamn bus.

ok, real life hate is actually much more exciting than anon hate.
